In recent years, with the acceleration of economic globalization, regional economic cooperation based on geographical relations has been moving ahead steadily. Being one of the most dynamic regions in the world, Northeast Asian countries are strongly complementary in economy and offer a huge potential for intra-regional economic integration. It is in the interest of each and every country in the region to enhance dialogue, communication and cooperation. To strengthen economic cooperation with Northeast Asian countries, Shandong Provincial Government along with Northeast Asia Economic Forum and other Chinese organizations have decided to create Northeast Asia Economic Cooperation Summit and turn it into an important platform for “annual high-level and economic discussion in Northeast Asia”. Weihai City successfully held the Northeast Asia Economic Summit in May 2002, which attracted many Chinese leaders and high-profile participants from countries in Northeast Asia.
　　The theme of the Summit is “Communication, Cooperation and Development: Promoting Growth through S&M Business”. There are five topics: (1) Cooperation among Medium and Small Sized Enterprises in Northeast Asia; (2) Investment and Financial Cooperation in Northeast Asia; (3) Transportation and Logistics Cooperation in Northeast Asia; (4) Cooperation among IT Industries in Northeast Asia; (5) the Buildup of Shandong Peninsula Manufacturing Base and Northeast Asian Industrial Relocation.
